France and Monaco star, Eric Abidal has revealed that his former Barcelona team-mate, Dani Alves offered to donate his liver for his cancer treatment but he had to reject the offer.
Speaking with Sportmail in a recent interview, the star player, who had just launched his Eric Abidal Foundation, made the revelation, saying: ‘My Barcelona team-mate, Dani Alves offered me his liver. He was serious but I could never have accepted it. He also has a family and a career.
It is a massive operation and it was too much.’ Luckily for the defender, his cousin, Gerard offered his to him, which eventually saved his life. ‘The risk for Gerard was huge. He saved my life. It is as simple as that.’ On Tuesday, March 15, 2011, Barcelona announced that Abidal had been diagnosed with a tumour in his liver and on Sunday, Aprl 10, 2015, he underwent a successful surgery, with his cousin, Gérard being the donor and now turns out for Monaco in the French league
