Nationally-acclaimed
headteacher Anne Lakey has been jailed for eight years for having sex with two
underage boys in the 1980s.
Lakey,
55, once called a ‘visionary leader’, was arrested for having sex with two
boys in the while working as a history teacher in Sunderland in the 1980s.
An
email sent to her school in 2012 from one of her victims detailed how the
‘disgusting sexual monster’ let him watch her bathe before taking his
virginity.
The
boy in question said that he saw a blog in which Lakey said her ‘raison d’etre
was to give young people the best start in life’ and felt compelled to contact
the school.
A jury found the mother-of-one guilty on 13 counts of indecent assault against two victims between
1987 and 1990.Her 20-year-old daughter Eleanor and husband, 39, watched
as she was sentenced to eight years in prison.
During
the trial, the jury heard how Lakey took the virginity of a second boy in a
tent on a camping trip while second husband Eamonn Toland slept in another tent
nearby.
‘As
a kid I thought it was great what was happening, but now I see it for what it
was – wrong,’ read a victim statement.
Both
her victims were left ‘confused’ and ‘damaged’ by the experience, Teesside
Crown Court heard.
Lakey,
who has been married three times, was credited with turning a failing
school into one of the country’s most improved. She was praised in 2011 by
Chief Inspector of Schools Sir Michael Wilshaw and was later became chief
executive of the Durham Federation, which comprises two secondary schools.
