Two nursing mothers were killed at the weekend by a policeman at
a burial ceremony in Fugar, headquarters of Etsako Central Local Government
Area of Edo State.
It was gathered that the shots that killed
the women were accidentally released by one of the policemen attached to a
traditional ruler in Uzaire clan of Etsako ethnic group who attended the
ceremony.
It was also gathered that the policeman's
gun went off as he tried to open the car door for the traditional ruler to
enter.
The two women were said to be seated under
the canopy along with other guests when the bullets hit them.
The incident led to confusion in the
community as youths descended on the policemen, who eventually escaped.
Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Samuel
Adegbuyi, confirmed the incident, stating that a case of accidental discharge,
which claimed the lives of two women, was reported to him last weekend.
"The policeman has been arrested and
investigation has commenced," Adegbuyi, who did not give the name of the
policeman, stated.
The name of one of the nursing mothers was
given as Sandra Imhaku, whose two-month-old baby was reportedly on her back
when the shot hit her.
She was said to have been rushed to Irrua
Specialist Hospital, Irrua, where she reportedly died on Sunday morning.
The other woman, whose name was simply
given as Mrs.Saliu, an indigene of Fugar, reportedly came from Warri, Delta
State, in company with her husband to attend the funeral.
She was said to have collapsed and died
instantly following the shooting.
