Rana, 31, travelled from Wolverhampton to Lahore, Pakistan, and murdered Ghulam
Asia on her doorstep after her daughter, 28-year-old Ayesha Riaz, split up
with him.A
jury at Woolwich Crown Court convicted Rana – described as a ‘violent and
controlling man’ by detectives – of murder under the Offences against the
Person Act 1861, which allows UK nationals to stand trial for crimes committed
overseas.
‘This was not a spontaneous
event, but rather a revenge-driven premeditated attack aimed at causing the
maximum distress and suffering to his estranged wife and her family,’ said
Detective Chief Inspector Tim Duffield of the Metropolitan Police Major Crime
Command.
The
court heard how Rana and an unnamed accomplice faked a parcel delivery to Mrs
Asia’s house. They rang the doorbell and when she came out they shot her
twice.
She
died hours later from internal injuries.
Rana’s
sister Nargus Ahmed, 33, and brother-in-law Muhammed Adeel, 35, were both
acquitted of assisting an offender.
